Jeb Puryear

Shakori Sessions episode 003 is an interview with Jeb Puryear, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for Donna the Buffalo.

Episode 003 was recorded at Circle City Recording studio in Pittsboro, NC on Saturday, October 5, 2019 during the 2019 Fall Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance, which Donna the Buffalo founded.

The original idea was to release this podcast in multiple parts, but with COVID-19 causing the cancellation of the 2020 Spring Shakori Hills Festival we decided to release the full conversation as one long piece for your listening pleasure.

We wanted to bring fans some previously unreleased tunes and a bit of history on both Donna the Buffalo and the GrassRoots festivals.

He performs four previously unreleased songs and the Donna the Buffalo staple, “Across the Way.” The new songs include two co-written with Gregor Bone “You Might Be Just Like Me” and “Your Name.” The two other new tunes are “Thinking You’re the One” and “Nothing to See Here Folks” closes out the session.

Jeb was gracious enough to take us on a journey through a wide-range of topics including the magic of Shakori Hills, some Col. Bruce Hampton stories, and his thoughts our current political situation which, at the time of recording, was headed towards an impeachment trial.

Donna the Buffalo was formed in Trumansburg, NY in 1989 and the first GrassRoots Festival was held in that town in 1991. Shakori Hills GrassRoots was born in Pittsboro, NC during the spring of 2003 and fall of 2004 and has been a stalwart of the festival scene ever since, hosting names such as the Del McCoury Band, Steep Canyon Rangers, Galactic, and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.

The North Carolina festival broke the mold on how to operate a festival as it is a nonprofit endeavor, based in volunteerism, that provides funding for arts and music education in a county with upwards of 70% of children on the free and reduced lunch plan.
